Whilst the children will learn through a creative, thematic approach, we also place great emphasis on the acquisition of key skills in reading, writing, communication and mathematics. Each term’s theme will have one or two subject specific focusses; for example Geography, History, Science, Technology and Maths. English will principally link to learning themes but where necessary, to ensure the secure learning of key basic skills, areas such as phonics are taught discretely.
PHONICS, SPELLING AND READING
Phonics is taught on a daily basis using the Pearson Phonic Bug programme throughout Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. Key Stage 2 children follow the Read, Write Inc scheme to develop spelling . Grammar learning is supported through the use of Pearson Grammar Bug.
Reading schemes include Phonic Bug phased books and the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme. Children in need of additional small group reading interventions use the Pearson Rapid Phonics scheme and Oxford Project Code.
Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils use the Rising Stars Mathematics scheme. The school has also adopted the use of Maths Passports to encourage and develop key mental mathematical skills. Children in need of additional small group mathematics interventions use the Pearson Rapid Maths Scheme. Lessons and homework are supported by the use of My Maths online.
Subjects such as Physical Education, Computing and some science units are usually planned and taught outside the learning theme, however the application of ICT skills is planned as part of the learning them.
At Lydbrook School, our curriculum enables children to develop and showcase art and music skills through our learning themes, performances and opportunities such as the Young Voices performance, offered to all Year 5 and 6 pupils.
Parents are informed of curriculum coverage for each class in each term through a newsletter and from postings on this website.
